Ethiopian cuisine has caught on for its spicy stews, roasted meats, vegetarian purées, and strong, fragrant coffee. Resident chef Rekiya Desta opened Fassil on International Avenue in 2006 after she and husband Moges Aman ran one of Vancouver’s first Ethiopian restaurants for 13 years. They decided to make the move to Calgary in the mid-aughts, and Moges recalls they worried that their new restaurant would have to weather the usual business doldrums during its first few months. Instead, it immediately took off. “Many Ethiopian Calgarians would vacation in Vancouver and eat at our restaurant,” he explains. “They became our customers once we opened Fassil.” Rekiya’s reputation as a chef has also spread outside the city’s Ethiopian community.
